GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) – A former Leflore County supervisor and former teacher at Quitman County Middle School has been indicted for simple assault on a vulnerable person.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (http://bit.ly/1TtKTex ) Larry Johnson faces a charge for allegedly striking a special-needs fifth-grade student at the school with a belt.

Witnesses say Johnson beat the child on two occasions last February, once in a darkened classroom and once in a trailer on the school’s campus.

Johnson waived a formal arraignment Thursday and entered a plea of not guilty.

Johnson served two nonconsecutive terms as District 5 Leflore County supervisor. In 2015, he unsuccessfully challenged Robert Collins for the seat.
