PDC names new director of social equity, policy and communications

The Portland Development Commission has named Mayra Arreola as Director of Social Equity, Policy and Communications.  She will manage a team of eight professional staff focused on the agency’s comprehensive communication approach, community engagement practices, the development and implementation of strategic plans, and management of the PDC Board process. She will work closely with community leaders, private and public sector partners, and policy makers to advance PDC’s goals to foster shared prosperity and social equity.

Arreola is currently the Director of Community Collaborations & Investment at United Way of the Columbia-Willamette, where she oversees community investment strategies, leads co-developed processes with key stakeholders and drives related metrics and evaluation. Before working at United Way, she managed the Latino Program for Rural Development Initiatives and Programs and Marketing for Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs.

PDC Executive Director Kimberly Branam said, “I’m confident that Mayra’s career-long focus on leadership, community and economic development will be instrumental in PDC’s continued efforts to support job creation, encourage broad economic prosperity, and make great places – with and for all the residents of our communities.”

Arreola said, “Equitable practices are crucial for healthy community growth. I’m excited to use my experience in eliminating barriers and increasing opportunities for underserved communities to help PDC create equitable programs, policies and communication channels that will advance equity for all of us.”

Arreola is a board member of the Women’s Foundation of Oregon, a member of the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs Advisory Board, a former Human Rights Commissioner and a former member of the Oregon Housing Stability Council. She holds a Master’s of Public Administration from PSU, and bachelor’s degrees in both communications and public relations from Universidad Latina de America and Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara respectively.

Created by Portland voters in 1958, PDC plays a major role in making Portland one of America's most livable cities. As Portland’s economic development and urban renewal agency, PDC seeks to create one of the most globally competitive, healthy, and equitable cities in the world by investing in job creation, innovation, and economic opportunity throughout Portland.
