Trump's remarks hurts those with disabilities, too

June 29 - To the Editor:

When the US president hurls an attack like “low IQ, Crazy Mika. . .” he is harming Americans who happen to experience disabilities. Ableism, discrimination based on perceived abilities, is very real. Americans with disabilities experience the highest rates in our nation of abuse, neglect and being victims of crime. They are practically invisible unless being exploited as perpetual children deserving of charity or as inspiration when they achieve everyday life goals. They are so marginalized, Americans identified the sexism but can’t even see the insidiousness of ableism. For decades, disability advocates have fought hard for these Americans to be seen as having skills and talents to share. Inclusion, equity and opportunity is their birthright as human beings and citizens. If only people like the US president could take off the blinding glasses of ableism to join the work of advancing the civil and human rights of people who experience disabilities instead of making it harder for them be “seen” beyond being at the bottom of the social hierarchy.
