Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Thanks GT, I know this is going to be a real effort for some posters, so I just want to give something back. I've edited every one of my posts in the first 40 pages now, but think I'm going to need to take a break

I think that I have edited my postings Jack . Thank you so much for starting this thread my friend .

Harry

Will do, Jack. But it may take awhile as you mentioned. :)

It certainly does Harry, and in large cities like Sheffield, you will find several slightly different accents too. Like everywhere, dialect is beginning to disappear, and local accents levelling out, though, sadly.

Thanks, and I will try to get those handles to "pop" better. :)
Definitely a few odd words over there but most people could be understood by a Yank from America.
No Yorkshire Pudding, but plenty of other wonderful foods and flavors, and a beer or two... :)

Hello, Guardians!
I've been travelling. I intend to edit my posts this weekend. I hope I can remember which pictures I had in my posts originally.

So, our good friend Knowtracks has sent me this lovely Lambfoot out of the blue!!
It has some really nice Stag handles, and is perfect mechanically! He must have gone over to Sheffield and picked it out personally from the assembly line!!
What a great knife, Dave!! Very generous of you!!
The least I can do is post some non-Photobucket pictures!!:D

It was my pleasure to work on this one Charlie! The old black plastic handles did the knife no justice, so I thought some stag would do nicely. I found the lack of a liner/spacer between the blades very intriguing. This was my first time handling a Lambsfoot. I see what the fuss is all about now, I may have to get one for myself.

Glenn did a GREAT job dressing her up! Thank You!! So now all she needed is a worthy "Guardian" :D
The scans look perfect with the red skunks and those sweet millefleur's!:cool::cool:

Wow! Absolutely fantastic Charlie. Thanks for sharing it my friend :)

I was just wondering if it was one of yours Glenn! I just couldn't see how else that great-looking knife had come about, they just don't get stag like that in Sheffield anymore. Great work, as always. I think I finally found an excuse to take advantage of your services  As for the central liner, most two-bladers I have seen, have one  Do you have a 'before pic by any chance?

He certainly did :) Very generous Dave, and very thoughtful, that's a great gift :)

Nicely done, Glenn! Perfect handles to give a Sheffield knife a boost in self respect!:)
Thanks for the thoughtful gift, Dave!

If Photobucket cooperates, here is a "before" photo.

Thanks a lot for posting that my friend :) I have a few other Rodgers knives from the same post-WW2 pre-Eggington period. The steel is good, but you can see that Rodgers had started to cut corners, hence those plastic covers, which shrink horribly with age, and possibly the lack of a central liner. You've really prettied it up :)

May I ask how is the steel on that pre-Egginton period knife? I just picked up a brand new A Wright knife and I can't get it to hold an edge. It says the blade is C75 carbon steel but it doesn't seem to behave like it. It doesn't even want to patina.

That sounds strange, mine have all taken and held a good edge. They do produce a few in stainless for a large British distributor, but I don't have any experience of them. If it was sold as C75, and won't patina, you might want to think about returning it

Thanks to everyone who has replaced their Photobucket-blighted pics. I really appreciate your efforts folks :)

I've been carrying this old Unity Lambsfoot a lot this week, background shows workers at Firth Brown's shell shop during WW1.

Unity Lambsfoot 1-6.JPG

As you can see, a lot of the workers are women. They were drafted in to replace the men who went off to fight in the trenches. The same happened in WW2, and a lot of those women were killed or injured in the steel works. The powers that be finally got round to handing out medals, and to unveiling a statue last year. I thought you might like to see the latter. It stands outside Sheffield City Hall

Have a good weekend Guardians

How are you sharpening your knife? I can get it to cut paper but after a few passes it stops cutting, then I touch it up again on a Lansky turn box and it will cut again ....but again a few paper cuts and the edge folds. I can only think the steel is very soft.

I have a number of A.Wright Lambsfoot knives, all C70 carbon steel, and have no problems sharpening any of them. Maybe there was something wrong with the HT on your knife, but I've not come across that with any of the Wright knives I've owned. Do you think your knife is stainless?

Ok I now know it is definitely not stainless after leaving it in vinegar for 3 hours! I was just surprised to see no natural patina developing through normal use so I had some suspicions, I use my knives and I'm a bit rough with them.

I totally love this knife but it won't stay sharp no matter what I do. Also one of the pins has started to protrude through the liner and is catching on the tang when opening and closing. You can see in the 3rd pic.

I fell in love with this knife when I got it but the lack of edge retention and now this pin issue has turned me back cold. Maybe I should return it but I'm wondering if they will take it back now I have fully patina'd the blade!

If not I will probably buy another one if these knives will stay sharp :D
