This year's "
Acting on the Call Summit Overcoming Critical Barriers to Maternal and Child Survival
" took place on August 24 - August 25, 2017 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The conference brought together ministers and delegations from 25 countries to celebrate progress to date; share best practices, lessons learned, and challenges, and identify the key actions required to achieve the
sustainable Development Goals
(SDG) 2030 targets. On the margins of the summit Save the Children and World Vision co-hosted the "Civil Society Ownership of Public Health Outcomes" meeting, where over a 100 faith-based organizations (FBOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) were represented and focused on exploring the contributions civil society can make to ending preventable child and maternal deaths, with a specific focus on the themes of the Acting on the Call event. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson released the
2016 International Religious Freedom report
which details the status of religious freedom in 199 countries and territories, and provides insights as to significant and growing challenges.

UN Action Plan to Prevent Violence
UN Secretary-General António Guterres

Plan of Action for Religious Leaders and Actors to Prevent Incitement to Violence that Could Lead to Atrocity Crimes
." This Plan of Action, the result of two years of consultations with leaders from different faiths and religions around the world, includes a rich and broad range of suggestions for ways in which
religious leaders and actors can prevent incitement to violence and contribute to peace and stability.

global development alliance (GDA)
for efforts in southern Niger to reduce poverty and strengthen resilience in targeted communities. The initiative will leverage private sector investment and innov
ations to increase and sustain household incomes, assets and adaptive capacity.
Interfaith Dialogue on Violent Extremism
In February 2017, the pilot project Interfaith Dialogue on Violent Extremism (iDove), was co-launched by th
e
African Union Citizens and Diaspora Directorate(AUC-CIDO)
, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and the
Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS)
to highlight the soft power of religion through innovative youth-led approaches in the field of countering violent extremism (CVE). A video summarizing the three day event can be found

. In October 2017, the iDove steering committee will host a workshop to formalize a training-of-trainers youth manual focusing the efforts of, identifying resources for, and culling the lessons learned of the 40 "iDover" participants.
Asili Project
Asili (Swahili word for "foundation") is a social enterprise startup designed to create healthier, more resilient, economically empowered, and functional communities in Eastern Congo. The Asili global development alliance (GDA) serves as a principal case study to demonstrate USAID's goals of engagement with private sector actors, co-creation and the mission of the Agency to partner to end extreme poverty in fragile political environments. USAID's partners in this effort are the
American Refugee Committee (ARC)and a cadre of Minnesota faith-based business leaders who are able and willing to contribute both real-world private sector guidance and financial resources. Asili is built around business models designed to be viable in low-resource settings and potentially enfranchise to local entrepreneurs.
Ushindi Project: Overcoming Sexual and Gender-based Violence
Ushind
i (Swahili word for "we overcome") is a USAID funded project with
IMA World Health
and a network of local, faith-based and civil soc
iety organizations that work in the North and South Kivu provinces in the Democratic Republic of Congo to rehabilitate and reintegrate survivors of sexual violence. Since it began it has reached close to 30,000 individuals in 10 health zones through its services, including
psycho-social
therapy, medical assistance for violence-related injuries and fistula repairs, as well as, capacity building workshops and reintegration assistance.
Interfaith Mediation Centre
For years, Nigeria has suffered extensive loss of life and damage to property from violent religious and ethnic conflicts, including the recent Boko Haram insurgency that has killed thousands of civilians and displac
ed over two million people. In 1995, several religious leaders of opposing factions helped found Nigeria's
Interfaith Mediation Centre (IMC),
including two clerics - one a Muslim, Imam Muhammad Ashafa, the other a Christian, Pasto
r James Wuye. IMC specializes in Muslim-Christian dialogue across Northern Nigeria from its base in Kaduna, and seeks to promote inter-religious dialogue by a variety of intervention approaches that encourage participants to find deeper understandings of their own faiths and new perspectives across the religious divide.
