Disney drops 'Fox' name, rebrands studio as 20th Century Studios

20 Jan 2020 | Rasmus Larsen |

Disney has decided to drop 'Fox' from the name of the iconic 20th Century Fox studio following the acquisition of 21st Century Fox last year, according to Variety.

20th Century Fox

20th Century Fox was formed as a result of a merger between Twentieth Century Pictures and Fox Film Corporation in the 30's. The iconic film studio has created or distributed beloved movies such as Home Alone, Die Hard, Alien, Avatar, Titanic and Star Wars. Disney acquired parent company 21st Century Fox in March 2019 and immediately ousted a couple of key figures, including executives responsible for Fox's decision to ditch Dolby Vision in favor of HDR10+.

20th Century Fox

Disney has now decided to remove 'Fox' from 20th Century Fox that will be rebranded to 20th Century Studios. The iconic logos will be updated to reflect the name change. However, it is not clear if Disney will make modifications to the splash screen on previous digital releases or only new ones. Variety says that Call of the Wild will be one of the first movies to be released under the new banner. Fox Searchlight Pictures will become Searchlight Pictures. Fox Corp will continue to operate Fox News, which was not included in Disney's purchase. Some of the movies and TV shows created in the Fox era, including The Simpsons and Avatar, have already made their debut on Disney+. Titles rated above PG13 will debut on Hulu, which Disney now also controls. - Source: Variety
