NOTE TO READER: If you are reading Wonder – please consider joining our FlipGrid collaboration (just fill out form below).
We are so lucky to be starting our first reading unit of the year, based around one of the best children’s books ever written: Wonder! If you know this book, then you understand why I get chills being able to read this important story with kids. This year, we will finish in time for the students to to take a field trip to see the movie at the theater on November 17th.
During the reading, we hope to collaborate with other students, share what we are learning with parents – work on critical reading skills and take the reading experience to an entirely different interaction level than would have been possible when I was a 5th grader – and doing all this while deepening comprehension, reading skills and empathy.
What makes this exciting is that we are going to collaborate with other classes from around the world to see and hear what students are thinking and experiencing during the reading. We will compare and contrast these experiences with our own classroom journey. Something I could have never done, at this level of interaction, before having a technology infused classroom.
We will be using two tools at first. to make this happen: FlipGrid and , Book Creator
Here is a look at our reading journal using Book Creator for Chrome. We fill this out as we read to interact with the content, learn skills and reflect. We will also capture reading fluency using this Book Creator each week – see lesson plan linked below.
If you are also reading Wonder and would like to share and collaborate on FlipGrid – make sure to go to #GridPals at the top of the Flipgrid dashboard to find another school reading Wonder.
In the end, Auggie is a unforgettable example of not judging people by their outside, by their Hijab, their skin color, or their learning or physical disability – and as Martin Luther King Jr. dreamt – “By the content of their character.”
