To shine a spotlight on the beauty of classical Chinese literature, Chunghwa Post issued several releases of “Classical Chinese Poetry Postage Stamps” from 2018 to 2021. Now it has followed up with a set of four stamps on poems dealing with the traditional cultured pastimes of “music, go, calligraphy and painting,” including Liu Changqing’s “Zither Played in Tune,” Wang Anshi’s “Go,” Su Zhe’s “Matched Rhyme to Liu Gongfu’s Inscription on Wen Lugong’s Calligraphy,” and Wang Mian’s “Plum Blossoms in Ink.” The poems follow: 1.“Zither Played in Tune” by Liu Changqing (NT$8): “Strum, strum the seven-string zither / Silent, I hear bleak notes of windswept pines / Although I love this old tune / Few people play it nowadays.” 2.“Go” by Wang Anshi (NT$8): “Don’t let the game disturb your mood / Whatever the result, it’s victory for me / White and black separate at battle’s end / And the clear board doesn’t reveal who won or lost.” 3.“Matched Rhyme to Liu Gongfu’s Inscription on Wen Lugong’s Calligraphy” by Su Zhe (NT$12): “Brush strokes like eagles flying are no less audacious than his youth / Ink transforms into flying dragons and snakes on paper / How laughable to so exhaust oneself studying calligraphy / That one turns into a disheveled mess!” 4.“Plum Blossoms in Ink” by Wang Mian (NT$28): “A tree grows beside the pool where I practice my calligraphy / Its every flower bears inky traces / It may receive no praise for beauty / But it emits the scent of heaven and earth.”
