Belfast Central station is set for a facelift and a new name.

The station entrance and ticket and retail areas will be improved and the “overall passenger experience” enhanced under new plans revealed by operator Translink.

Reflecting the changing dynamics of the surrounding area, the station will be called ‘Lanyon Place’ from September.

Announcing the news, Translink CEO Chris Conway said that attractive, high-quality passenger facilities have a part to place in increasing the use of public transport.

He added: “‘The Lanyon Place area has become a major hub of activity, with the ‘Lanyon’ name being adopted by a range of neighbouring businesses, alongside Belfast city council’s exciting plans for the Lanyon Tunnels.

“The station will be completely accessible throughout the works and every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum during this time.”

Chris expects the modernisation work, which will be undertaken by Cleary’s Contracting, to be completed by September.

More than 2.6 million passengers used Belfast Central station in 2017.
