[LIST] The Most GPU-Intensive Games
#1
Click here to jump right to the list!

Since I had good success with my first list: (List) Games that may not work well with MTVU

And since NarooN made this thread: (List) The Most CPU Intensive Games

And I had asked before: Which games have the highest GPU requirement

I thought I would make this thread as a companion to his. My thread above is more of a discussion and I can't rename it, so I'm gonna merge the data into here in a nicer fashion. Obviously since PCSX2 is more CPU limited than GPU limited, this list will have less impact than NarooN's. But still, it's nice to know.

Obviously like NarooN's list, this is a WIP. Feel free to post any games you have experience with.

To make this list more consistent, please only report for the GSDX plugin and PCSX2 1.0.0 and higher. Software mode is obviously irrelevant as that is done on the CPU.

You might think "Well, I have this godly GPU so how will I know if a game is intensive for it or not?" Well, even us people with higher end GPU can test too!

1. Get GPU-Z
2. Open it to this screen:
3. Run a game that is pretty average. Do this just to get a feel for your GPU. Note the GPU load %. Say for instance you ran FFX at 6x resolution and saw 20% GPU load.
4. To test other games, run them in the same resolution(we don't all have to use 6x, just make sure your comparisons are the same. i.e. don't compare FFX at native to Xenosaga at 4x), and note the GPU load %. If it's a lot higher than your baseline's, you will know it is a demanding game.
5. No speedhacks for testing!

You don't have to, but the best reports would include this information:
  • Your computer specifications
  • The version of PCSX2 you are using
  • The version of GSDX you are using
  • Whether you are using DX9, DX10, or DX11
  • The resolution you were testing in(GSDX resolution, not monitor)
  • Whether widescreen hacks were in use
  • The game you used as baseline
  • The GPU load% for your baseline and the game you are reporting

Example report:

Specifications in signature.
PCSX2 1.1.0.5475
GSDX 5372 AVX version
DX11
6x
Baseline: Final Fantasy XII IZJS(25-35% Usage)
Burnout 3: Takedown(80-99% usage)

I had my doubts, but he said it in the post I linked to. Do you have it to test? I don't.

Sadly I only have the american version of kh1 but i know that kh2 is more demanding and that runs just fine at 3x native on my little gtx 650.

Awesome thread Laugh

Yep, the Burnout series is definitely GPU-bound. I can't get playable speeds on them with my little APU lol. Can't wait til I get a decent dGPU, waiting on a few other things before I plunk down on one.

Since part of pcsx2fan's GPU benchmark includes a DQ8 bit, I think that's fair to say. I actually have it, but I don't have it ripped right now to test.

What about Burnout 1 and 2? I don't have those to test, only 3 and revenge. Are they GPU bound too?

Burnout 2 at least runs really quick on my machine.

IIRC Juiced is a good example of a GPU heavy game.

Anything after burnout 2 ends up being fairly gpu intensive.
