In a highly unusual move, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Rochelle Walensky overruled a recommendation by an agency advisory panel that had refused to endorse booster shots of the Pfizer (PFE) -BioNTech (BNTX) Covid-19 vaccine for frontline workers, The New York Times tells us. The CDC panel recommended boosters for a wide range of Americans, including tens of millions of older adults and younger people at high risk for the disease, but excluded health care workers, teachers and others whose jobs put them at risk.
Amid mounting concerns over the U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain, a Department of Defense watchdog found an overreliance on foreign suppliers that could harm national security, but the Pentagon failed to assess the risks of shortages or develop strategies to mitigate disruptions, STAT reports. Among the shortcomings, the Defense Department did not aggregate and analyze the origins of finished medicines or active ingredients to determine the reliance on foreign suppliers.
