Reports: 49ers Sign Bly

The San Francisco 49ers signed two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Dré Bly to a one-year contract today in a swift reaction to Walt Harris’ season-ending knee injury, according to John Clayton and Bill Williamson of ESPN.com and Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat. Bly, who played for the Denver Broncos for the past two seasons, is reportedly slated to compete with Tarell Brown and Shawntae Spencer for a starting job opposite Nate Clements. The 49ers also looked at Brian Kelly after Harris tore his right anterior cruciate ligament, according to Maiocco. Bly, 31, was cut by the Broncos in February a few years after signing a five-year, $33 million deal. Bly has intercepted 40 career passes and forced 18 fumbles. UPDATE: The 49ers have formally announced that Bly has signed a one-year deal. In a statement, 49ers General Manager Scot McCloughan said: “We lost a Pro Bowl caliber player in Walt Harris this week, and we were able to fill that void today with another Pro Bowler in Dré Bly. We added a player with a passion for the game, tremendous productivity and proven durability who knows what it takes to compete at a high level in the NFL. It was important to get Dré in here quickly so that he can get acquainted with our system, our coaches and his new teammates.” UPDATE: The contract is for the veteran minimum of $845,000, according to Maiocco.
