-Self Publishing Review

"One of the best novels I’ve read in a while ... I was impressed, and it takes a lot to do that for me."
-Ron, Goodreads

Eddie Marivicos is trapped in a cycle of exploitation. And his daddy likes it that way. He was brought up by his father Papa Marivicos to work in the family carnival. Papa is a cruel man who runs his show like a labor camp. When it comes to the Marivicos Summerlong Carnivalé Festival, the show must go on… at any and all costs.

Eddie has recently been “gifted” with the ability to hear others’ thoughts; to him, it’s a supernatural horror story that he cannot escape—a curse. Dubbed “second sight”, this condition propels Eddie to local stardom, and for Papa, Eddie becomes the goose that laid the golden egg. But there are other opportunists who would make use of Eddie’s powers for their own personal gain.

As other people from Kayjigville come into Eddie’s orbit—the mafia, and a greedy businesswoman who resurrects her fortunes after being disgraced—their fates become intertwined with his. Dr. Chain, a clinical psychologist, is tasked with looking after the young man after an explosive accident caused by Eddie’s powers sends the town reeling. An escort named Lexi will cross paths with Eddie, and provide him comfort during a grim time in his life. Being close to the mind-reader does not come without consequence.

In this paranormal horror story, everyone that comes within Eddie’s orbit will be bloodied and scarred before it’s all through. Papa Marivicos wants power and will stop at nothing to get it—extortion, murder, and perhaps even conjuring a Lovecraftian horror from another dimension, a presence that sends him into a spiral of grotesque mutation. Eddie wants nothing more than to break away from the darkness carved in his DNA, but will have to reach to the ends of the known universe to do so. The Marivicos family drama escalates as father and son learn to unlock the latent powers of their ancestors. One by manipulating sound, fire, and darkness; the other by harnessing the power of light.

The 47th Annual Marivicos Summerlong Carnivalé Festival will kick off a chain of events that will usher in a dark and tragic horror upon the carnival, Kayjigville, and even realms thought to be the stuff of only the most far-flung paranormal fantasy... Feast your senses on this tale of dramatic supernatural fantasy tale!

The only thing I didn't care for was the characters thought too long on whatever it was that the writer felt needed explanation. Example: S.King's The Shining....where he us in the basement reading and thinking about the history if the hotel/resort . But that being said I honestly loved this book. It was a refreshing change from what I usually end up reading. AND there are no book 2 or 3 or 4.... No cliff hanger no etc happened to this person or that person. I loved Eddie. And I am keeping this loaded because I know I will read it again. That's how much I liked it! So thank you Mr. Grass !

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

I read a lot of weird, quirky, unique books through my ARC service, and this is definitely near the top of all of those lists. Black River Lantern has a language and flow all its own. The writing style is beautiful, even when it's grimy, and there were so many interesting turns of phrase or moments where I just kinda had to pause and soak it in. There's a weird, hazy quality to it sometimes, especially in regards to the time period - initially I was thinking it takes place somewhere in the 50s or so, because of some of the language and the carnival/ferry aspects, but later on there's more pop culture references and more modern dialogue. It gives it a disjointed, timeless feel, which I think was the point.

The characters are vivid and feel real. They're mutli-faceted, and even the ones we don't like have touches of humanity to them. I really felt for our poor main character - he absolutely deserved better. The plot is a little loose in places, but I was invested enough in the characters that I didn't mind. The ending was very open, and I hope the hook in the epilogue means we'll get a sequel (I'd especially like more details on what happens to our MC at the end). If there is a sequel, I will definitely give it a go.

This book isn't going to be for everyone. It's weird and wild and often bleak, but beautiful in its own way. As a reader, you just have to kinda take it all in stride and let it soak in. I'm definitely a fan, though, and I think this author will be one to watch moving forward, he has a lot of potential.

One of the best novels I’ve read in a while. Character developments, scene settings, plot development, and finally a good finish I could get behind. Overall, I was impressed, and it takes a lot to do that for me. Well worth my time and I’m anxious to see whatever else this author has to offer.

The circus or carnival is in town! Papa runs it with aplomb, starring his son, a functional illiterate who can predict the future. The son is tortured by being able to hear the thoughts of all. The son escapes always returning to Papa. With his friend Abakoum, the son visits houses of Ill repute, meeting a young woman whose mind he cannot read. A love begins while Papa devolves into someone crueler than before. From there, you will have to read this book and hope the Carnival never comes to your town.

It went from southern gothic to borderline Lovecraft all in the space of a chapter. I just really don't know what to say about this except for keep reading it until the end. The writing is really good. The characters are amazing. I've read some really evil characters, but this book has EVIL characters.

The horror is balanced out with the goodness of the other characters. There's no one who has what anyone would call a good life, but they're still some pretty decent people despite this. Lexi is a prostitute who works in a brothel. She's not the hooker with the proverbial heart of gold, but she loves, I guess, Eddie.

It's just a really twisted book. I'm don't know if I want a sequel, which the ending sets us up for. I don't think I could handle a happy ending and I think a sad ending would just be a let down.

I somewhat enjoyed reading Black River Lantern. I liked that you saw the story through different character's viewpoints. The ending summed up the story well, but I just didn't fully understand what was going on in the novel. That could have just been me and no fault of the author. The story progressed well and didn't seem to drag on like some novels can. This story is also unique and unlike others I have read. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.

Eddie has a gift or a curse is what Eddie would call it. He hears thoughts, everyone's thoughts and he can't shut them out.
A good read that I would recommend to those who love a good horror story.

I don't quite know what to say. I found this book pretty compelling and unsettling. It is well written and had my emotions all over the place. I had to finish it to find out what happened, but I also found it to be so creepy. Perfect if you are looking for something to make your skin crawl and give you some nightmares. It is a good read and quite unlike anything else I have read. I recommend it.

This book had more twists and turns than an ivy vine. While the parts seemed to be disjointed, the author brought all the threads together and provided a satisfying climax even though the main character had to sacrifice much to achieve peace. The read is not for those who want to see things through rose coloured glasses but it you like the depiction of the seamier side of live, you'll get some of it here.
