Late last week, the appearance, capture and ransoming of a raccoon made headlines in the Dominican Republic. In part, this is because there are no raccoons supposed to be on the island of Hispaniola in the first place, and because the guys that captured the animal are asking for a ransom of RD$100,000 to hand over the animal.

The animal, as previously stated is not native, and must have arrived here on board a container, since it is extremely unlikely for one of the very wild animals to have been brought here as a pet, given the controls at all of the airports.

Wildlife inspectors from the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources have visited the barrio of Cristo Rey where the raccoon is supposedly kept, but have not been able to convince the “raccoon-nappers” to deliver the animal to the authorities.

If I were the guy in charge...(as if)
I would declare this a matter of national security and put the screws to the guys holding the raccoon(s).
I mean...
1...There are no natural predators raccoons in the D.R..
2...There is an abundance of garbage which would allow the animal to thrive. They will forage for and eat almost anything.
The guys holding the animal for ransom don't exactly sound like any old citizen who stumbled across it on their daily walk.
It has a whiff of a planned operation.
If people can get drugs into the country, they can get animals.
They say there are raccoons on Isla Catalina.
Maybe it (they) hails from there.

I am a wildlife rehabber that specializes in Raccoons. Also vaccinated so can handle them safely. Would love to help.

Not to parade on anyone, but there is an article I think in today's Listín Diario (could be El Caribe or Hoy) where it says the raccoon from Cristo Rey has escaped and no one know where it is. Looking like a bandit means escapes come natural. lol

Yeah right.
That sounds like a likely story.
Could be an escape of convenience.
And remember that I am a fully paid up member, in good standing, of the Society for the Preservation of the dr1 Lap Top Cops.
