U-turn: No one has been pardoned, Amit Shah remarks on Rajoana’s death sentence

NEW DELHI, India—Replying to a question posed by Congress parliamentarian Ravneet Bittu about the pardoning death sentence of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, the Indian Home Minister Amit Shah today said that no one has been pardoned.  He asked Ravneet Bittu not to go by media reports as no one has been pardoned.

It may be recalled here that the Indian Home Ministry had earlier recommended commutation of Rajoana’s death sentence on the eve of the 550th birthday of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Beside it, the Indian government had also approved the premature release of eight other political Sikh prisoners.

Amit Shah’s statement has left the SAD leadership in an extremely embarrassing situation as the Akali leadership was claiming credit for getting commuted the death sentence of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana to life sentence.

SAD president Sukhbir Badal has termed Amit Shah’s remark in this concern as a very unfortunate. “We will take up the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister by meeting them personally,” he added.
