I agree, but IIRC he was an @$$ in the locker room.

Oh yea - hell he was telling recruits not to come to Alabama on their visits.

You can't question Saban in recruiting but I think he screwed the pooch in this one instance. Gilbert being at the top of the board was a no-brainer. The guy is a phenomenal talent at the position. You've got to make a run at him. When that fell through, I think Saban and several other coaches let Washington's measurables cloud their judgement. He's very good, but he's not in the same category as Gilbert and is not the phenom at the position. He's huge, has a huge catch radius, etc. but just not the same. So Saban got caught chasing the piece of eye candy that doesn't taste quite as good as it looks and he didn't get it. This was a situation where a bird in the hand with Pegues would have been the best play but maybe that's hindsight talk.

Exactly my point. We do have to worry about locker room fits -- and/or locker room trouble makers. Kamara is a perfect example as to why.

Apparently Zach Evans just got suspended for his team’s state championship game today

ETA:

I may be way off here but if Saban said some has signed with us but hadn’t announced yet, that seems to indicate others than George, Baker, or Jones to me bc they already announced or have grade issues . Correct??

Baker & Burroughs (grades) and Jones did not sign early. It appears Damieon George is the OL who signed secretly (until ceremony at his HS) that Saban spoke about. I think Jase McCellan and Traeshon Holden are the only other signed, unreleased NLIs that Saban alluded to.

Nick Saban pleased with 2020 class, still sees areas to recruit (BamaOnLine | segments)
quote:

“We have several more guys that will either sign later or have already signed but have not released it yet, and we have agreed not to release it for them,” Saban said after Wednesday’s Citrus Bowl practice. “So, those guys, we really can’t talk about."

Crimson Tide wide receiver commit Traeshon Holden is set to sign later this evening, and Oklahoma running back commit Jase McClellan is expected to flip his pledge to UA. …

“We always want to at least replace the offensive linemen. We feel good about that, which I know some of it hasn’t been released yet."

It happens. Everyone was surprised when Gilbert picked LSU, and we were thrown for a loop. Washington was probably number 2 on the board and we started on him. It sucks to miss on Pegues, but Clark was really good prior to his injury. Plus, Billingsley was a big pick up last year. I think Brandon Fraizer is a good prospect that we can sign. If not, 2021 has some really good prospects.

That will be bought by Georgia boosters.

If Bama doesn't start playing the game, then there is no point in trying to recruit head to head vs Georgia. That $$$ will always win, no matter how much work Saban puts in on a recruit.

$$$ wins over early playing time too.

Crying about other schools paying players is weak. Everyone cheats. It is what it is.

If you think Bama is squeaky clean when it comes to recruiting then you're a moron.

We've bought plenty of recruits over the years.

I'm absolutely 100% happy we are not signing Evans. After our internal issues the last few years I want nothing to do with that kid.

And he may end up winning the Heisman trophy! If so, good for him, but knowing what we know now I am totally fine with Sanders + the 3 we got and not dealing with all the other "stuff" that kid brings.

I'm not that bothered if we lose a recruit to UGA because kirby comes off like a down-home moron and is therefore somehow more relatable to a recruit. But if it's really just that we're getting outbid, then come on wealthy backroom Bama powerbrokers, get your fund game up!

Yeah I abandoned my Evans campaign when he had that big fallout to begin his senior season.

Besides that Gibbs kid looked even better than him.

Seemingly from the beginning Washington really liked UGA. And, like I mentioned I do believe his mother wanted him to go to either Tennessee or Bama; and he wanted UGA. Let the kid go to UGA. We'll be fine. Washington will have a front row seat to the arse whipping we'll give them next season.

It being George just seems odd. I know the scheduled announcements are in flux for all star games all the way through the start of the game but he isn’t scheduled to commit, at least not yet. LINK

I don’t remember than allowing many guys who are already committed to do an announcement. Maybe it is just wishful thinking that it is someone else.

Well, at least we can focus on other players.

I am not sweating the TE position. I can live with our current crop of TEs getting those 5 touches a game next yr

My bad. I wrongly assumed he'd announce at the Under Armour game. It'll be at a ceremony at his HS. So I've edited my post above.

Even though George is committed, Tim & Hank won't directly leak a secret signing ahead of a kid's announcement ceremony (nor will I), but they'll sometimes make CB picks if they hadn't aready -- like they did with Washington today.

I think McCellan, Holden and George were the only signed, unreleased NLIs Saban alluded to. I don't see anyone that seems likely to satisfy wishful thinking -- possibly Henderson. But it wouldn't be the first time Saban surprised us.
