Luka Garza rose from his seat on the bench after watching his teammate, EJ Jarvis, cut into a wide-open lane and slam his sixth and final dunk of the night.
“If [Garza is] out, I’m just trying to replicate what he does on the court,” Jarvis said. “I’m just trying to get the team together, be that person that knows everything that’s going on.”
Jarvis, a 6-foot-8 sophomore, played one of his best games of the season, helping the No. 17 Frogs (14-3) extend their lead while Garza dealt with foul trouble in the second half. Jarvis capitalized on nifty passes from teammates and recorded 12 points — missing only one field goal — seven rebounds and three assists.
One of those assists came as time expired in the third quarter, when Jarvis passed the ball to Coby Davis, who buried a shot from near halfcourt to send Maret into the final period ahead 67-54.
“We just tried to stay in our offense, run our offense, and it happened that we had a hot night tonight,” Davis said. “We’ve been working on shooting in practice, we did a lot of shooting drills, and it paid off in the end.”
The Frogs kept the three-point happy Warriors (16-6) out of reach before Garza returned midway through the fourth quarter. The Iowa commit flashed his dominant post game, spinning and pivoting his way to a team-high 20 points and 12 rebounds in just 22 minutes.
Davis (19 points), Elijah Bowens (18) and Luke Downing (18) led a balanced attack from the backcourt, scoring efficiently and rotating the ball. The trio combined for nine three-pointers on 12 attempts.
The Frogs led for nearly the entire game. In the first quarter, with the defense blanketing Garza, Jarvis made a backdoor cut and found an opening for a slam. He drove baseline for another dunk on the next possession, and the Frogs held a 19-13 lead after the first quarter.
Woodson junior Kiyon Boyd scored a game-high 36 points, while Derquan Washington had 16 and Tunde Scrivner added 12, but the Warriors often were forced into low-percentage shots. Davis, a Wake Forest football commit, kept Boyd in check in the second half en route to the victory.
“We still got a lot of work to do, but to know that we are that caliber of team, it feels good,” Davis said.
Maret’s win was the fourth and final game of the showcase. In the opening game, Aliyah Mathura had 23 points and Jakia Brown-Turner added 20 to lead No. 20 McNamara to a 79-46 win over Bullis.
Wilson senior Isaiah Jennings hit a game-winner in the closing seconds as the No. 15 Tigers beat Thurgood Marshall, 60-59, for their 21st consecutive victory.
Lamont Tate’s last-second three-pointer capped Chavez’s fourth-quarter comeback in a 63-62 win over Theodore Roosevelt.
