DTS Play-Fi gains new 'Home Theater' wireless audio features

DTS Play-Fi, the wireless audio platform, will gain new features with a 'Home Theater' expansion. The first compatible TVs will launch in the third quarter.

DTS Play-Fi is a WiFi-based audio platform for TV audio and multiroom music. TVs with built-in support can connect wirelessly to compatible DTS Play-Fi stereo and surround sound speakers. A new expansion of the system called 'DTS Play-Fi Home Theater' was announced this week. - "That means: no adapters, no dongles, and no add-on boxes. Using just the TV's built-in Wi-Fi and users' existing wireless networks, anyone can enjoy an incredible surround sound experience with DTS Play-Fi Home Theater," said Xperi, the company behind DTS. Consumers using a TV with DTS Play-Fi Home Theater can:
  • Use the TV’s built-in speakers as part of the surround system or upgrade them with a Play-Fi enabled soundbar or discrete Play-Fi enabled front speakers
  • Add Play-Fi enabled speakers as surround speakers
  • Add up to two Play-Fi enabled subwoofers
  • Utilize Play-Fi’s multi-room grouping of the TV with Play-Fi enabled speakers for music and TV audio, and app-based headphone listening

    First TVs coming this year

    The first TVs with the expanded 'DTS Play-Fi Home Theater' system will hit the market in the third quarter of 2021. No TV brands were named but one of the main partners is Philips (Europe). Philips has a launch event scheduled for August 31. "Consumers no longer need to compromise aesthetics for an improved audio experience. They can attain better sound quality simply by using a wireless subwoofer placed out of sight or build a high-performance home theater using a full complement of wireless speakers and subwoofers." Apple, Bang & Olufsen (WiSA), Sonos, and Roku are also offering wireless audio technologies for TV stereo, surround sound or object-based sound. Future TVs with DTS Play-Fi Home Theater support will be compatible the existing ecosystem of Play-Fi soundbars, speakers and amplifier, said DTS. Products are available from over 30 consumer electronics brands.
