LG 2019 OLED TVs gain Nvidia G-Sync support

LG and Nvidia have joined forces to add compatibility for G-Sync to select 2019 LG OLED TVs (C9 and E9) over HDMI 2.1.

G-Sync for LG 2019 OLED

The two companies announced the partnership at IFA 2019. Following Nvidia's initiative to bring G-Sync support to special - and very expensive - "BFGD" LCD TVs, the company is now expanding support to OLED TVs. LG's C9 (55, 65, 77") and E9 (55, 65") models will be the first OLED TVs to support Nvidia G-Sync for smoother gaming without flickering, tearing and stuttering. As OLED is a self-emissive display technology, gamers can except excellent picture quality in games, the companies said. - "We are excited to bring G-Sync Compatible support to LG’s 2019 OLED TVs and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate support to our GeForce RTX 20-Series GPUs," said Matt Wuebbling, GeForce head of marketing, Nvidia. "Gamers will be blown away by the responsiveness and the lifelike visuals on these TVs when playing the latest PC games featuring real-time ray-tracing powered by GeForce." LG says that input lag is 6 ms for 1440p content at 120Hz and 13ms for 4K content at 60 Hz. "The minimal input lag of LG’s OLED TVs, of less than a frame, with no loss in picture quality, makes them the best displays for gaming," LG said. In addition, OLED TVs have extremely fast response time. Also read: LG 2019 TV line-up LG's W9 lacks support for VRR and will not be compatible with G-Sync.

G-Sync in LG 2019 OLED TVs

G-Sync will work over HDMI 2.1 in the LG OLED TVs, which are the first TVs to offer HDMI 2.1 ports. Competitors have yet to transition to the new HDMI standard. More HDMI 2.1 compatible TVs are expected to launch next year. LG used the opportunity to also highlight support for other gaming-related features in its latest OLED TVs such as Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). Besides G-Sync, the TVs are already compatible with Xbox One's VRR, which relies on HDMI VRR. - "It’s no secret LG OLED TVs are coveted by gamers world over and we are committed to optimizing the OLED gaming experience for them," Sam Kim, SVP of the TV product planning, LG. "With Nvidia G-Sync adoption, we are showing that OLED TVs have the support and backing of the world’s top gaming hardware brand to make their products look their best." Nvidia recently announced that G-Sync is now compatible with FreeSync, the competing specification developed by AMD. However, this cross-compatibility is currently limited to the DisplayPort connection. LG did not comment on its plans for FreeSync support. Samsung supports FreeSync in select TV models but these are limited to HDMI 2.0, capping resolution and/or range. G-Sync support for LG C9, and E9 will be added via a firmware upgrade "in the weeks to follow", the company said.
