I had an instance of this back when I was a recruiter. A lovely lady came to me clearly in distress about her career. She was at a top law firm but was finding the pressure intolerable. I kept digging on what she really wanted to do and it turned out she had always dreamed of being a baker, specifically cookies and cakes. Rather than find her a law firm with a less pressured culture, I said to her she should follow her dream and we talked about what that might look like. Cut to a couple of years later. I wrote an article in The Lawyer about passion. I said if I was hiring a craftsman, I'd want one with a passion for their job, and said I thought that this could be extended to lawyers: I'd want a lawyer who was passionate about being a lawyer. The comments section lit up. I was accused of gross naivety and worse. One comment even said "Oh, here he goes again..." (!!) Then another comment was posted, from the lady I mentioned earlier. She told off my critics and described the scenario I outlined, saying that she had quit the law to start a bakery and had "never been happier". One of the proudest moments of my life (although obviously I didn't make a recruitment fee out of it, so maybe my former bosses wouldn't agree!).
Love this!
Oh I can think of an awesome example! cannot wait to meet you here John-Paul Flintoff 🙌
