Brake down paddles

I am looking to get a brake down paddle to fit into my Taureau for this springs creeking. Compact as possible.

Where should I start looking?

Just got my Mitchell break-down delivered yesterday, so haven't tried it out yet.... but looks and feels real good. Certainly feels better than any of the others, I've previously had. But as you well know, the proof is in the using.

I have a 58" Aquabound Carbon Edge 2 piece that fits in my Taureau. I took the footpedals out, and just slide it behind the saddle. If you use the footpedals you could fit the blade up in front of your knees. Price is $120 give or take and it's a paddle I wouldn't mind using if I had to. Solid shaft, blade pops on with a push-pin ferrule. I've been playing around with the one price version last summer, and it's a great paddle for the $$$, though not as nice as my Mitchells.

Did you buy it that way or cut a one-peice and add the ferrule? I have a one-peice AB Edge I'd like to convert, but I've not done that before

Here in Europe Kober make the S Power canoe split paddle, you can custom order the paddle to be split into 2 or 3 pieces and where you want the splits to be. I have a 2 piece split, the shaft and T grip part is longer than the paddle blade part. It fits fine in the back of my Taureau without having to remove the footrests.

Of course the paddle blade slides completely back out of the way!
Always get a good split paddle, if you have lost or broken your regular paddle its gonna mean that the river is challenging, the last thing if want on a challenging river is crappy 20$ paddle.

i have a 3 piece aquabound. i couldn't get it back apart after using it, but sent it in to them after a quick reply form customer service and now it is better than new. i recommend it as a great, not too expensive breakdown.

The paddle was built as a two piece by AB. Instead of bonding the blade to the shaft, they installed a push pin on the blade. It's a very snug fit without the pin and the pin keeps the blade from twisting or working loose. In dealing with kayak paddles, you have to be careful about 2-piecing them. The shaft is often reinforced where the ferrule sits, and if you just cut and add an insert you'll weaken the paddle. Not the end of the world if it's just a spare, but still not something I would do to a paddle I plan to use much.

Have seen that happen with aquabound breakdowns before. It took a couple people, really pulling and twisting hard to get it back apart. Believe you can remedy that by, sanding down the slide in portion a wee bit. I had to do the same to a Werner, that I cut-n-converted by myself.

... the first time I used it. And while it wasn't the end of the world, having just lost the second paddle of the day was not much fun.

yeah i wasn't too surprised when it happened with mine. i remember roy's being a royal pain that day on the caney fork
