California prisoners call for hunger strike

Prisoners who are in solitary confinement in California are calling for a hunger strike in protest against what they say are state failures.

Inmates say urgent reform is needed in the wards to end what they call the torture of long periods in isolation.

Some of the thousand or so prisoners who are segregated have been there for more than a decade and often never leave their cells.
