The last British resident to be held at Guantánamo Bay has described his experience of the hunger strike protest at the detention camp as it was reported that William Hague is considering making a public plea for his return.

Shaker Aamer, a Saudi citizen with British residency rights, is among the 166 detainees at the American facility in Cuba. Mr Aamer, 44, was taken to the prison 11 years ago and has never been charged with an offence. The US officially cleared his release in 2009 but no action has been taken.
