Wilson All-Met Sean Savoy took an aggressive approach when he went down to San Antonio in January for the U.S. Army All-American junior combine back in January. After a breakout year on the gridiron this fall, Savoy was intent on proving he could hang with any prospect in the country.
So the wide receiver/defensive back kept jumping to the front of the line in drills, hopeful his eagerness to compete would reflect well with the coaches in attendance.
“I was just going for the best,” Savoy said last week. “The ones that they said was the best, I just called them out to prove I can check them.”
The plan seems to be paying off. In recent weeks, Savoy received his first major scholarship offers from Maryland, Virginia Tech, Miami, Syracuse and Old Dominion, in addition to the offer he already had from Temple.
Though Savoy is only 5-foot-10, he is coming off a junior year in which he emerged as one of the area’s most electrifying playmakers, particularly when he gets the ball in space. He caught 71 passes for 1,351 yards on offense, had five interceptions on defense and scored 26 total touchdowns, including two on kick returns.
He recently went down to Virginia Tech and met with new Coach Justin Fuente. He will take an unofficial visit to Miami in June.
“It was exciting. I was just blessed to get another offer, especially from big schools like Miami and Virginia Tech saying they’re interested in me,” Savoy said. “But when I went down [to Virginia Tech], I loved the atmosphere. Also, I think I’m going to love the atmosphere of Miami when I go down there on June 23rd. I just give a big shout out to the coaches for seeing something in me.”
Savoy ran indoor track this winter and will compete in the 100-yard dash, the 4×100, the 4×200 and long jump with Wilson’s outdoor track and field team this spring.
The quarterback who threw all of those Savoy touchdowns is also benefiting from the attention Savoy is getting from college coaches. According to Coach Mark Martin, junior Steven Williams also received his first Division I scholarship offer from Old Dominion last month.
