I’m writing a book using Word 2003. The spellcheck is useful but Word doesn’t like my grammar and covers entire pages in wiggly green lines, even when I believe the sentences are perfectly constructed. It particularly dislike sentences with several clauses. Can I get rid of it?

Grammer checking can be particularly useful if you’re not confident of the way sentences are structured, however there are different styles of writing and the grammar checker doesn’t always pick them up. I remember some time back when I was trying to type the term “diet pills” and my grammer checker insisted that I couldn’t do this because “diet” was a verb not an adjective. The PC Support guys couldn’t really tell me why this was, so I just had to live with it.

Sometimes it’s just easier to turn the whole thing off and not bother about it, especially if you know exactly what you want to accomplish. Here’s what you do:

• Click Tools
• Click Spelling and Grammer
• Click Options
• Untick the box that says “Check grammar are you type”
• Click OK
• Click Cancel

This turns off the automatic checking for you. You can still run a check manually if you want, but at least you don’t have all the wiggly green lines to content with.
