Mother says mental health facilities not adequate

The mother of a teenage suicide victim says mental health facilities in regional New Zealand are inadequate.

Corey Adams, who was 16, was found dead by his mother, Cherie Adams, on 20 June.

Hastings coroner Chris Davenport says the teenager had attempted suicide in September last year and in March.

His last contact with the Hawke's Bay mental health service was after a drug and alcohol overdose four days before his death.

The coroner says the nurse at the hospital reported he did not appear depressed so refused to admit him.

Mrs Adams says she pleaded with the DHB to care for her son in the adult unit until she could find youth suicide services. She says there is not enough support for teenagers.
