The way we receive and share information is constantly evolving. Today, online sites offer a unique opportunity for us to engage with each other in immediate and effective ways. Facebook has over 750 million active users, YouTube over 400 million, and Twitter over 100 million. Over 50% of adult Americans are now active on Facebook, up from only 8% in 2008. Unlike traditional sources of information like newspapers and television, these social networks are interactive, facilitating communication and allowing people to share their own information and opinions.
For these reasons, social networks are a great way for constituents to engage with their Members of Congress. That’s why I am hosting the second annual Member Online All-Star Competition, a friendly competition among my Democratic colleagues to encourage Members to continue to engage their online followers in creative and thoughtful ways.
