A 48-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the rape of a defenceless, paralysed girl at her makeshift shelter in Kanchanaburi’s Sai Yok district, police said.

Manas Saikaew, a resident in Sai Yok district, was apprehended at a roadside pavilion in front of Bang Wang Phor school in tambon Lumsum late Wednesday night, said Pol Lt Kasarn Para, a duty officer at Sai Yok district police station.

The arrest followed a complaint by a 64-year-old woman that her 12-year-old paralysed granddaughter had been sexually abused at their crude shanty on Wednesday. The girl was alone because her grandmother went out to work at a construction site that day.

A medical examination found evidence of rape. The girl, who lives with her grandmother, cannot walk and is reliant on a wheelchair.

Police sent to investigate were told by local residents they had seen the suspected raptist sitting at the pavilion.

Mr Manas was detained and found to have scratches on his body, and confessed to having raped the disabled girl, according to police.

He was charged with child rape and held in police custody pending further legal action.
