New York Giants running back David Wilson is trying to make his way back from a neck surgery that cost him 11 games of the 2013 season, and his medical exam this week will be a crucial step in making that happen.

More from New York Giants

Wilson has been cleared to participate in the Giants’ OTAs, but is not cleared for contact or football drills. Other than his workouts with the team, he has remained on the sidelines.

But per a report from Newsday, Wilson’s medical exam scheduled for this Wednesday is going to be huge.

“Wilson will have one of the most significant medical appointments of his life Wednesday when doctors take an MRI and look at the surgically repaired neck…” wrote Tom Rock. “If it does not heal properly, it could cost him the rest of his career.”

That’s quite a swing in opposite directions for one exam. Either take the field and play, or maybe your career could be done.

A healthy Wilson would go a long way to helping the Giants bounce back from a very disappointing 7-9 season, and would certainly give quarterback Eli Manning a boost with a more potent running game.

Wilson can be an electrifying runner, and is prone to break off a big run at any time. Having him in the backfield with with Rashad Jennings and rookie Andre Williams would give the Giants the type of offensive balance they love to have.
