After winning the Mexican War (1846-48), the United States gained land that had previously been held by Mexico. The U.S. Senate (one of the two branches of Congress, the legislative body of the United States) ratified the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on March 10, 1848. In the treaty Mexico gave up roughly half its territory, which included New Mexico and California, to the United States. Mexico also recognized the Rio Grande as its border with Texas. In addition, Mexico received payments in millions of dollars from the United States for the land the United States had received. Five years later, under the terms of the Gadsden Purchase, the U.S. purchased a small portion of land from Mexico for another $10,000,000, which was widely regarded as further compensation for the land lost in the war. The territory the U.S. gained is in present-day Arizona

The Mexicans lost almost 1/4 of there original land that they earned from Spain in the Mexican revolution in 1821.
They were not allowed citizenship immediately. Some "emigrated" into Mexico while others remained in the new US territories. However, those who did remain were relegated into a lower social sphere like the Native Americans, Blacks and Mormons of the early 19th Century. Many US Congressmen and Senators of the period did not support the war simply because they did not want to create a nation that would not be prodominantly white, like Sen. John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. Calhoun once argued against a full conquest of Mexico saying, "Ours is the government of the white man." (Howe, What Hath God Wrought, pp. 798-99)

After the Mexican-American War, a large percentage of Mexican territory came into the United States. However, much of that land was sparsely populated, making the Mexican-American population not very high. The treaties that ended the Mexican-American war promised Mexican Americans that they would be able to hold onto their property. However, this was not often enforced and there were a number of laws passed by the States and the Federal Government that were discriminatory to Mexican Americans.

By and large, Americans who were not White Anglo-Saxon Protestant were maltreated prior to the 1930s and Mexican Americans were no exception to this.
