Iron Bowl moving to Friday this season, 2010

The next time Alabama and Auburn meet in the Iron Bowl will be on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

The Iron Bowl is moving to Friday kickoffs the next two seasons.

That's the word from Auburn, Alabama and the SEC Office this morning. CBS Sports moved the games to televise them nationally in 2009 and 2010.

This year's game will be Nov. 27 at 1:30 p.m. in Jordan-Hare Stadium. The 2010 game will be Nov. 26 in Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. It will be the sixth Iron Bowl played on a Friday, according to Auburn.

This is all a part of the SEC's new TV contracts. The decision to move the game from a Saturday kickoff was a contractual agreement between CBS and the SEC.

Here's what Auburn Athletics Director Jay Jacobs and football coach Gene Chizik said about it:
Jay Jacobs:

``Moving the Iron Bowl is part of fulfilling the contractual arrangements between the Southeastern Conference and CBS. It will also be the marquee rivalry game that day and provide tremendous exposure on CBS for our program and our state."

Gene Chizik:

"The Iron Bowl is the best rivalry in college football and the conference and CBS moving it to Friday will signify the kickoff of college football's biggest weekend."

Here are the five previous Iron Bowls played on Friday, according to the fine folks at Auburn media relations:

* November 25, 1988 (Auburn 15, Alabama 10 in Birmingham)
* November 27, 1987 (Auburn 10, Alabama 0 in Birmingham)
* November 29, 1974 (Alabama 17, Auburn 13 in Birmingham)
* October 23, 1903 (Alabama 18, Auburn 6 in Montgomery)
* November 15, 1901 (Auburn 17, Alabama 0 in Tuscaloosa)
