A new teaching resource which aims to challenge the use of hurtful words like ‘nutter’ and ‘retard’ to describe people with mental ill health and learning disabilities is being introduced in Halton.

It is hoped the fresh approach combat the stigma surrounding this sensitive subject.

The material has been developed by 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which launched ‘Sticks and Stones’ in April, 2010.

Steve Nyakatawa, Halton Council’s operational director for learning and achievement, said: “We are delighted to approve the trust’s Sticks and Stones pack which will enable teachers to engage children and young people in important conversaions around stigma, mental health and learning disabilities.

“I would encourage every teacher in the borough to make a commitment to use these ground-breaking lesson plans in their classrooms.”

The packs, designed for different age groups, contain a variety of useful information, lesson plans, activities and materials to help teachers deliver the campaign’s key message: “Sticks and Stones may break my bones but words will also hurt me.”
