Police Chief Apologizes for Emails

East Hampton's police chief is apologizing for sending two racially-charged emails to town employees.

Chief Matthew Reimondo forwarded the emails to the town workers last year, the Hartford Courant reported. "I apologize for my lapse in judgment regarding the emails in question," Reimondo said in a statement. "This has been a learning experience and one that will not be repeated."

According to the Courant, one of the emails showed a picture of hip-hop singer Coolio and a disparaging remark. The other, the paper reported, was a picture of President Barack Obama as a witch doctor.

The emails were anonymously given to interim Town Manager Robert Drewry.

This latest controversy comes just four months after Reimondo fought to get his job back. Former Town Manager Jeffery O'Keefe eliminated the position of police chief as a cost-saving measure last summer. Residents complained, and overwhelmingly voted to overturn O'Keefe's decision. Reimondo was reinstated in November.

According to the Courant, Councilwoman Sue Weintraub, believes Reimondo's opponents are trying to use the email controversy to try and get him fired.

There has been no word from Drewry on whether the town will proceed with any kind of action against Reimondo.
