Neighborhood Was Shelled by Rockets, Activists Said

Rescuers searched for survivors in the rubble of a Damascus neighborhood identified in this video as Hajr al-Aswad, which activists said was shelled on Monday night. Men dug frantically with their hands, pulling away handfuls of dirt and large stones. Around them stood several partly collapsed apartment buildings, their walls torn away. Finally the men pulled a limp child from the debris and celebrated with chants of "God is great" as they carried the child away.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an antigovernment group based in Britain, said that "rocket bombardment" killed three and injured 20 in Hajr al-Aswad on Monday night. Fighting has raged in the Damascus suburbs for months, and has also struck the center of the capital in recent weeks.

We do not know the identity or medical condition of the child who was rescued in this video. We do not know the type of weapon used in the bombardment of this neighborhood. We do not know the relative strength of the government or of rebel fighters in this area of Damascus.

These two videos show damage in the Barzeh neighborhood of Damascus after it was struck by government "missiles," according to the camera operator. The footage shows damaged buildings, rubble and the blood-smeared tile floors of a house.
