14 dead after car bomb explosion in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- An Iraqi security source said a car explosion that rocked Baghdad has killed 14 and injured many others.

IraqiNews.com said the blast Thursday morning killed three civilians and 11 others.

The source said police forces and ambulances transferred the injured to hospitals for treatment.

The bomb exploded in the Hurriya area of northwestern Baghdad near the Hurriya Police Station, the source said. Security sources believe the bomb was an assassination attempt on the head of Diyala University, Abbas al-Dulaimi.

IraqiNews.com said Dulaimi survived the attack.

The bomb also damaged nearby shops and buildings.
