If someone recalls something minor incorrectly, do you have to correct? From Questions that Make YOU Think

December 22, 2011

I thought I’d elaborate on this a bit.

I’ve noticed in many conversations with my family how various stories of the past differ from my memory. Usually, the stories are entertaining rather than being of great importance.

So if I correct the data, what would that do? At the very least, I am making the person telling the story a little wrong.

The other thing is perhaps I am wrong. Since it’s not important, I simply let it go. I rarely need to prove I’m right and someone else is wrong.

There are times when it’s not a story of entertainment and some fact is incorrect. If it is important, I will correct it in a manner least challenging to the other person.

I have a related article on my site “How to Correct” http://www.carlwattsartist.com/How-to-Correct.html

I’d like to invite you to read my plan:  “New Civilization” http://www.carlwattsartist.com/New_Civilization.html

Even if you “corrected” them, would they accept what you said, or remember it correctly?

You’re point is excellent. I recall times I’ve been corrected. If I didn’t see it as really correct, it made no difference to me. Usually, if anything, created minor antagonism in my universe.

I temper that with the fact that people can be trying to correct for two reasons: to simply make themselves right and me wrong; or to really help me.

I realize the vast majority really want to help and are doing the best they can. Therefore, I try not to make them wrong or to correct them but to guide them to understanding.

If I have time, I can usually succeed.

      Happy New Year!

I’m not here very often as you can see. If they duplicate, understand, the data it then can become theirs and yes they will remember it correctly. What they disagree with, fail to understand, will not be remembered most likely.

Again, I have been successful at changing viewpoints, opinions etc in many people without upsetting them 🙂
