A bus driver has been questioned in hospital and given police bail over a crash involving two buses and a skip lorry in which a man died.

Eighteen people were hurt when a single-decker bus collided with the lorry on the A630 Doncaster Road at Hooton Roberts, near Rotherham.

Police said the skip lorry then collided head-on with the double-decker bus.

The driver of the double-decker, Peter Drury, died at the scene.

Mr Drury, 57, who lived in the Brinsworth area of Rotherham, was a First Travel Group employee.

South Yorkshire Police said the driver of the single-decker bus, a 35-year-old man from Sheffield, had been questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and had been bailed until July while inquiries continue.

He is being treated for minor injuries at Rotherham District General Hospital.

Detailed investigation

A total of 18 people were injured in the crash.

Twelve of those were taken to either Rotherham District General Hospital or Doncaster Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Police on Saturday said most of those had been discharged from hospital. Their injuries ranged from shock and bruising to minor head injuries.

A further six people were treated for minor injuries at the scene by paramedics.

Insp Pete Serhatlic, of South Yorkshire Police, said the single-decker bus appeared to have been travelling along a side road towards the A630 immediately before the collision.

He said a detailed investigation was now under way to try to piece together what happened.

The A630 was closed for five hours after the crash, which happened at 1515 GMT on Friday.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
