The Sudanese army announced Monday that it killed over 40 rebels during clashes with fighters of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector at Surkum area in Blue Nile State, official SUNA news agency reported.

"The armed forces have managed to repulse an attack by the SPLM rebels against Surkum area in Blue Nile State," the agency quoted Al-Sawarmy Khalid Saad, Sudanese army spokesman, as saying.

"The army killed more than 40 rebels, destroyed a tank and two vehicles of the attackers, and confiscated heavy weapons and ammunition," added Saad.

He said the armed forces pursued the rebel remnants and carried out wide combing in the area, noting that a number of army soldiers were killed.

The Sudanese government sent military reinforcements in February to Blue Nile State, which is witnessing armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the SPLM rebels.

Sudan's ruling National Congress Party (NCP) earlier accused foreign organizations of fighting alongside the rebels in Blue Nile State. Endi
