Uni-Solar's two Greenville plants going on two-week shutdown, idling 400 workers

GREENVILLE -- United Solar Ovonic's two Greenville plants will shut down for two weeks starting Sunday, idling Uni-Solar's more than 400 workers as the solar-energy products company puts the brakes on output under slowing demand.

During the shutdown, the company's Rochester Hills-based parent firm, Energy Conversion Devices, Inc., is consolidating two Auburn Hills plants into one, resulting in 70 layoffs there and an estimated annual savings of $4 million.

A $220 million Battle Creek plant under construction will also be completed, but not opened, until orders pick up.

Energy Conversion Devices cut its guidance to match last year, with its stock dropping to close at $14 a share Wednesday in trading on the Nasdaq. The stock had peaked at $83.33 in the past 12 months.
