Amy Grant, Chris Thile to Play with Alabama Symphony in 2009-10

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra has announced several series for 2009-10 season. Topping the list of SuperPops guests are Amy Grant and Michael Feinstein. Symphony 7 concerts spotlight mandolinist Chris Thile, DJ Spooky, Tan Dun's music from "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and new music from ASO composer-in-residence Paul Lansky. Concertmaster and Friends will feature music by American composer George Crumb, who will appear as percussionist, and an Astor Piazzolla concert.

Nov. 13. Amy Grant.

Amy Grant opens the 2009-10 ASO SuperPops series with an appearance on Nov. 13.

Dec. 4

Jan. 22. Rachel York, Aaron Lazar, William Michals and Birmingham Concert Chorale sing music by Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Feb. 12. Michael Feinstein: The Sinatra Project.

April 23. Oz with Orchestra.

All concerts start at 8 p.m. at BJCC Concert Hall, and are conducted by Principal Pops Conductor Christopher Confessore. Subscription prices are $96-$288. Single tickets are $24-$72.

SYMPHONY 7

Oct. 29. Chris Thile's Classical Jam. Justin Brown, conductor; Chris Thile, mandolinist; Daniel Szasz, violinist. Music by Bach, Bartok, Radiohead, Thile and Debussy.

The ASO's Symphony 7 series adds to its edgy appeal with an appearance by DJ Spooky on Jan. 14.

Jan. 14

. Devolution: Concerto for DJ & Orchestra. Michael Morgan, conductor; Paul Miller "DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid," deejay. Music by Anthony Paul De Ritis.

March 25. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Mei Ann Chen, conductor; George Gao, erhu. Music by An-Lun Huang, Tyzen Hsiao, Toru Takemitsu and Tan Dun.

May 13. The Road to Zappa. Justin Brown, conductor; Paul Lansky, curator; So Percussion, percussion ensemble. Music by Lansky, Edgard Varese, and Frank Zappa.

All concerts start at 7 p.m. at the Alys Stephens Center. Subscription prices are $45-$75. Single tickets, $15-$25.

FAMILY CONCERTS

Oct. 25. Symphony Spooktacular: "The Composer is Dead," musical murder mystery by Lemony Snicket, music by Nathaniel Stookey. Yaniv Attar, conductor. Birmingham Children's Theatre.

Dec. 6

All concerts start at 7:30 p.m. at Brock Recital Hall, Samford University. Subscription prices are $75. Single tickets, $25.
