Brian Costello of the New York Post advises the Jets not to draft a quarterback early. The Ravens have several options and no sure things if they want to take a wide receiver with the 26th overall pick. Bengals TE Ben Utecht is releasing an album of Christian music this week. Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer doesn’t think the Browns should trade WR Braylon Edwards until they’re sure they can draft Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree. Said Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert of spread offenses in college, “It gets more difficult with the evolution of the spread offense. The things they’re doing in college, most of it won’t transfer to the NFL.” Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com suggests the Texans look at Mississippi DT Peria Jerry in the first round. Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star lists wide receiver at the top of the Colts’ areas of concern entering the draft. Said Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, “We have some talent. The cupboard’s not bare. We just need to add to the talent. We need to add the right kind of guys, and we certainly need to hit on a few guys. We’ve got a few holes that we need to address.” If WR Torry Holt does sign with the Jaguars, receiver becomes a higher draft priority for the Titans according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. Even though the Broncos signed three running backs, RB Peyton Hillis still expects to get a fair amount of touches. Chiefs LB Zach Thomas isn’t interested in rebuilding. The Raiders are more interested in on-field production than off-field red flags. Said Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith, “I’d rather pay our own people and believe in the draft and get the lower free agents that are out there -- good players -- because of the massiveness of the [top free-agent] contracts.” Cowboys DE Marcus Spears is entering the final year of his contract. Giants G.M. Jerry Reese takes issue with the idea that he has to add a wide receiver to the team. Said Eagles coach Andy Reid, “Jason Peters is the best left tackle in football.” A look at potential defensive end targets for the Redskins in the draft. Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune writes that the Bears shouldn’t lock themselves into drafting a wide receiver. Said Lions WR Ronald Curry, “Right now I’m just basically trying to make the team. It seems like a talented receiver group, but I talked to the coach and he said it’s a great place to reinvent yourself. So I’m just looking for the opportunity to go out there and still show people I can play.” Will linebackers be the focus of the Packers draft? Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press thinks the Vikings need to draft an offensive lineman. Said Falcons WR Michael Jenkins, “Each year has been a learning process for me. Being inside last year for me opened things up where you can try to do more on the field. The more you can do, the better off you are.” Charles Chandler of the Raleigh News & Observer is intrigued by the idea of West Virginia QB Pat White joining the Panthers. A look back at the trade the Saints made for RB Ricky Williams, ten years later. Gary Shelton of the St. Petersburg Times thinks the draft represents the best route back to respectability for the Buccaneers. Said Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, “When you talk about the overall depth of a football team, I think you have to look at the age of your depth. You may be three or four deep at a position, but it may be veterans who have a number of years.” Said Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur of QB Marc Bulger, “What Marc showed me and us was that he’s a good decision-maker, he’s a very accurate passer, and he gets the ball out on time. Those are all things that are primary to being a good quarterback.” [Editor’s note: In other words, the Rams will be drafting a quarterback in round one.] Preventing sacks on offense and getting more of them on defense are keys to the 49ers draft. Seahawks president Tim Ruskell said the team still plans to move T Sean Locklear to the left side when the time comes to replace T Walter Jones. [Editor’s note: In other words, the Seahawks will be drafting a left tackle in round one.]
