The MGH Asylum Clinic provides no-cost forensic medical evaluations (FMEs) to survivors of persecution seeking asylum and other forms of humanitarian relief. Please read below before submitting your FME request. We look forward to working with you and your client!

I. Key Terms:

  • A Forensic Medical Evaluation (FME) is conducted by an independent health professional to document the consequences of psychological and/or physical harm on an asylum-seeker.
  • An evaluator is a medical or mental health professional (an MD, PhD, LICSW, PhD, PsyD) who conducts the FME. All volunteer evaluators within the MGH Asylum Clinic are clinicians affiliated with Mass General Brigham (MGB).
  • A medico-legal affidavit is the report the evaluator team produce after conducting the FME.

II. Please understand the following guidelines before submitting your request:

  • The clinic will place cases with evaluator teams of clinicians and training clinicians. This usually includes a lead evaluator who signs off on the medico-legal affidavit and one or two observing evaluators who could be residents, other training clinicans, or students. Gender preferences for evaluators may delay placement.
  • We require a minimum of 8 weeks to complete an evaluation. If you have an urgent evaluation, please e-mail us asylum@partners.org immediately after submitting your request form.
  • We can only follow-up with complete requests. A complete evaluation request requires:
    • An attached asylum affidavit (does not need to be a final draft)
    • The date of the client's individual hearing or interview - if nothing has been scheduled, please provide a reasonable approximation.
    • The date when the medico-legal affidavit must be completed - if this is an urgent case, please e-mail us immediately after submitting the form.
  • After completing an evaluation, we screen clients for social needs and connect them with resources. We hope to use this program to better understand the unique needs and challenges asylum-seekers face and how to best meet those needs. Clients can choose not to participate.

III. Additional notes:

  • At this time, we are unable to accommodate out-of-state clients for evaluations.
  • If for some reason, we cannot take your case or our response time does not meet your timeframe, we encourage you to submit a referral to the Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) network requesting a local evaluator through this link. Please notify us immediately if your case has been placed elsewhere.
