The department said Ridgway was transferred to the U.S. Penitentiary in Florence, Colo., on May 14.

Department of Corrections spokesman Andrew Garber did not give a reason for the transfer, but said in a statement, “The department constantly evaluates and reviews the overall safety and security of our operations, and makes decisions regarding the housing of offenders accordingly.”

“The department does not comment about individual offenders and their circumstances,” he said.
Ridgway was arrested in 2002. By agreeing to cooperate in the search for the bodies of his victims and pleading guilty in 2003, he avoided the death penalty.
He pleaded guilty to his 49th murder in 2011.
