A special lecture on Clinical Psychology Practice in Intellectual Disability was delivered by Professor Deshkeerti Menon,former director of the National Institute for Mentally Handicapped,Hyderabad,at the ICSSR Complex,Panjab University (PU),on Tuesday.
An alumnus of the varsity,Professor Menon is a specialist in Clinical Psychology,NHS Foundation Trust,United Kingdom. The lecture was organised by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) North-Western Regional Centre and the Department of Psychology,PU.
In her lecture,Professor Menon said future trends in practice of Clinical Psychology will rely on academic psychology,particularly experimental psychology,research methodology and cognitive behaviour therapies.
She also talked about capacity assessment for people with instinctual disability,dementia and human rights and self determination in decision making. In view of this,a new bill on disability is also likely to be presented in the Parliament , she added.
Professor Menon said psychology would continue to enrich our understanding of human behaviour in a wide variety of situations particularly health and disease.
Meanwhile,in his address,president of International Society of Mental Training for Excellence and Member Council,ICSSR New Delhi,Professor Emeritus of PU,Professor Jitendra Mohan said clinical psychology was the most challenging field in psychotherapy. The depth of clinical practice lies in the management of problems that could reduce agony and enhance well being,he added.
