Hudson County psychiatric hospital nurse charged with kicking restrained patient

Nurse Shuraz Ali, 58, of Jersey City, is charged with endangering the welfare of an injured or helpless person in connection to the incident that allegedly occurred Hudson County's psychiatric hospital

A nurse working at the Hudson County psychiatric hospital in Secaucus was arrested yesterday on charges he kicked an incapacitated patient several times and he faces suspension without pay, Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari said today.

Shuraz Ali, 58, of Van Nostrand Avenue in Jersey City, is charged with endangering the welfare of an injured or helpless person in connection to the incident that allegedly occurred at Meadowview Psychiatric Hospital on County Avenue, according to the criminal complaint.

On May 26, Ali “purposely and recklessly endangered and injured the victim who was medically incapacitated, specifically by kicking the victim (name omitted) several times on his right leg while being restrained,” the complaint says.

Hudson County spokesman Jim Kennelly said Ali’s title is “head nurse” he was hired in September of 2007 and his salary is about $78,000.

An official said a nursing supervisor and two attendants witnessed the alleged incident and will be placed on leave pending the outcome of the probe.
