Im curious how many  there are world wide? How many are there per country?

There are about 1300 grandmasters in the world. I think just a little over that number by now.

They are spread among 75 countries, with Russia having 156, Germany next with 61, and 15 countries having one each:

As I understand it, anyone 40 or older and just starting out can be one.

I had imagined there were more than 36 people over the age of 40 in India. In truth a youthful nation!

You don't understand it right

it has nothing to do with age but with skill

there have been and there are many grandmaster under 18. The youngest one getting the title of grandmaster was 12 years old (Sergey Alexandrovich Karjakin)

I reckon the NM and WNM titles are USA-based only, and the other titles are part of the FIDE rules.

This page needs to be updated; there are many more than 1300 grandmasters now, in 2016.

How many grandmasters are there in chess?
It is the highest title a chess player can attain and is generally held for life, however FIDE regulations allow for the revocation of titles in cases of cheating or corruption. The July 2015 FIDE rating list includes 1497 grandmasters, of which 1464 are male and 33 are female.
