Reason d'etre

Integrating nature and urban lifestyle, making cultivating plants indoor fun, easy and accessible to everybody, by:

  1. Developing an open source design platform by sharing the design and DIY-guides of our cultivation systems and how we integrate them into our lives.
  2. Share our failures and success on the best cultivation practice, for everybody to learn from.
  3. Build an open science knowledge database about plants suitable for indoor farming and collect and shares information on the best cultivation practices.

Recent years awareness around climate change, resource limitation and urbanization have resulted in a growing interest in sustainable living and urban gardening. Classic agricultural and biological research institutes and companies focus on green house and outdoor cultivation. To our knowledge currently no university have a research group focused on and addressing indoor gardening, and even less a focus on knowledge building and communication, in a form that can be used by normal citizens living with out access to a garden.

Current activities & How to get involved

  • Spread the word: like The Indoor Farming Society Facebook page to get updates and share it with your network.
  • How to participate
    • Join Labitat and start working on the project.
    • Contribute to the plant database by documenting your own indoor garden growth achievements by photos or using our form (Under development)
    • Help to develop growth equipment and systems in our open source hardware group. (Under development)
    • Evaluate and measure the performance of the plants, the equipment and the methods. (Under development)
    • Help build opensource plantophile environment measuring devices.

Draft Vision & Manifest

Nature is fantastic it gives joy and quality of life, but in architecture and design we still just see nature as a resource, we are currently using it, patching on nature as an aesthetic green-washing-band-aid, not integrating the biological and chemical process, the power, balance and sustainability of nature. Besides the recent years advances in biotechnology, electronics, nanotechnology and genetics all you have in your house is a single house hold plant, detached from the entire ecosystem of your life or the house, just standing there looking nice.

We can do better than this. We are bringing citizen science, urban gardening, architecture, plant nurseries, agriculture and horticultural science together to create a new platform that connects to modern urban lifestyle and the technological possibilities in the 21st century and in a sustainable way re-integrates nature into modern urban lifestyle.
