Great 720p projector.
3 out of 5 stars
Great 720p projector.
I fell in love with this projector. Its not as heavy as another 720p projector that I had tried and it had a few features that i felt were missing from the other. Even though I know it crops into the censor to give you a zoom function and when you use it you loosing resolution, I love this function as i don't have to move the projector to fill up a blank wall at my apartment. The picture quality is really good and because of if my sons don't want to use our regular 50" flat screen 3D tv anymore as they ask for movies on the "big screen". My only annoyance with this projector and the only reason I am giving it a 3 out of 5 stars is that the internal speakers don't turn off when you plug a external speaker. For the most part I don't mind it too much because when we watch movies what I do is turn the external speaker all the way up diminishing the sound from the internal projector speakers. But i really wish there would be a way to completely turn them off. If i ever permanently mount this projector some wear I'm going to have to open it up first and turn off the speakers or re-rout the sound some how.

First I read a ton of reviews before "biting the bullet" on this inexpensive entry level projector. But I also knew what I was expecting when I ordered it. My goal was to complete a Theater room in my basement for under $1000 (this included projector, screen, furniture, 2x4's, drywall, paint, light fixtures, carpet, etc., ~$900 spent so far, under budget (-:!) Also As I was doing this on the cheap I built my own screen from Roc-Lon Budget blackout Material ~106" in size, I mention this as it will have some impact on the quality of the picture. This is also my first projector so I have no frame of reference with other projectors.

    Negatives or somewhat negatives:
-Like other posters mentioned the fan is reasonably loud, but I have found I do not notice it once a movie is playing.
-Yes the included speaker is terrible but I suspect most people using this for entertainment would have a surround sound system.
-Keystone correction is manual and really quite useless unless you can handle some sections of the screen out of focus. For the best quality picture with this system plan on mounting it so that the lens is level and centered with the center your screen.
-Yes you may notice some artifacts with fast moving scenes but In my opinion they are hardly noticeable.
-some posters have also complained about the screen door affect, I only noticed this when standing 1-2 feet from the screen, once I was at a normal sitting distance I could no longer make out.

    The Good:
-The level of brightness is good, yes you can view movies and games with a light (think a handful of 60 watt bulbs, not a handful of 100 watts and the sun beaming in through the window) on but really the picture looks the best in a light controlled environment in near to complete darkness.
-The contrast and quality are good. But to get the best picture you will have to play with the settings. I also noticed that changing the "zoom" on the projector depending on the input will significantly improve the image. For example blue rays look best with the 16:9 zoom, but the xbox 360 looks the best when set to point to point. I also set all my devices to transmit at the 720p so that all the converting/compressing is done before it reaches the projector. My suggestion and my opinion is to make adjustments to your other devices (blu ray player, dvd player, xbox, etc) first before you attempt to make adjustments on the projector itself this ensure you already have the best quality coming into the projector to start with.

Keep in mind this is a short throw projector, Mine is set at 10-11ft from the screen to get the 106" image.

With all that said and even with a couple negatives I still gave this a 5 star rating, because it exceeded my expectations for the price. going from watching movies and playing xbox on a 47" LG to ~106" projector screen has been awesome, And yes some time in the distant future I will likely upgrade my projector, and screen but for now I am extremely satisfied. So if you are on the fence and on a budget I would recommend you purchase this projector you will not be disappointed.

    UPDATE 08/27/2014
Still extremely happy with the product for the price. Anyone who purchases this for such a low price and isn't happy set their expectations too high. Again this isn't the end all be all of projectors at a bargain basement price, its a reasonable entry level projector for a bargain basement price. I use it nearly every day to play XBOX 360-Grand Theft Auto, Netflix, Blurays, DVD. So if you want to step into projectors and spend as little money as possible this is the best way to go.

Honestly, before I bought this, I read the reviews and tempered my excitement, expecting the typical "you get what you pay for" situation (like most electronics). I was buying this for a party and for general movies/gaming fun. Comparing it to other projectors out there at the same price, the DG-757 had the highest resolution and the best overall reviews. But even then, I expected it to be pretty dim, be in focus at as much as 6 ft wide, and expected the resolution to be "good enough" for my needs. I've seen $100-200 projectors out there that output hardly any lumens with ridiculously low resolution, and to me the $270 price tag had me nervous...

When I received it, I was surprised at how lightweight it was. And furthermore, it was incredibly easy to set up. It was basically plug-and-play and started up right away with a quiet fan. Plugged in a Gamecube and was extremely impressed with how bright and luminous the colors were. With a little adjustment beyond the default Picture Modes, I got the contrast ratio looking great, the colors even more vibrant, and decreased the sharpness quite a bit because the default settings were a bit distracting on lower quality inputs (which makes you realize how low-resolution DVDs actually are). When using the hdmi input, the HD (720p) picture looks fantastic! We immediately tried out Jurassic Park and were transported back to the first time we saw it in the theatre. (so many nostalgia feels.)

I'm still working on a ceiling-mounted setup as an eventuality, but just by setting it on a table some distance away I was shocked at how clearly it projected a bright, 10-12 foot wide picture. (I think that based on how much the focus knob can still turn, I may even be able to get up to 16-feet wide, but that might be pushing it...) I've seen a lot of posts in here about the "screen door" effect that happens when you can see all of the pixels as if you're looking through a screen door at a scene, but that didn't seem to be much of a problem. Sure, I can see the individual pixels when I'm a few feet away from the screen, but that seems nitpicky (and actually somewhat impressive that I'm able to clearly see the individual RGB bands in the pixels in focus when peering closely at the screen).

Multiple types of inputs on the side (even a USB input), though I do wish the RCA ones stuck out a little bit more so that older cables with shorter metal casings fit a bit more snugly. They work fine though, and the HDMI input is a breeze. The sound is what it is; one very loud speaker inside of a projector. (Which I also didn't expect to be so loud.) But there's an audio out as well, though I'd definitely just recommend connecting your source audio directly to a surround sound system instead of through the projector.

And yes, you generally do need to turn most of the lights off for this, but isn't this the case for most theatre setups? I do, on the other hand, think I may be able to use this projector for business presentations afterall, as long as the blinds are drawn and the lights dimmed.

Overall, this is a great projector for someone who doesn't already have a projector. Yes, someday I will upgrade to a better one. But for now, this perfectly suits my needs and I'm loving every minute. Right now, almost every night is movie night. When I was a kid, I thought I needed to be a millionaire to have that sort of thing in my house. haha.

So, yes, it's better for you to temper your excitement for this projector if it's your first. And if you already have a projector, you may want to get the best, most HD projector on the market and pass this one by. This projector is not going to be as good as your HD-1080p television with all of its amazing dynamic range color gamut all the way into finicky gradients of dark blacks and light whites. But for what it is, it's pretty amazeballs.* You're living in the future!

    * - Yep, totally just used that word in a review.
