Moss Point fires officer accused of offering leniency for sex behind stadium

MOSS POINT, Mississippi -- Patrolman Cedrick Williams was fired Wednesday for conduct unbecoming of an officer, City Attorney Amy St. Pe said today.

Last month, a young woman stated in a complaint that Williams, an officer on the force for about a year, offered to tear up a traffic ticket in exchange for sex, according to the report.

Police Chief Sheila Smallman brought the issue to the Board of Aldermen at its Nov. 2 meeting and aldermen decided to terminate Williams. Williams, who was suspended with pay, appealed that decision to the board Tuesday night, but aldermen decided to move forward with firing him.

Smallman said Tuesday that the department launched an internal investigation when the complaint was received. The woman who filed the complaint has not been publicly identified.

The patrolman said he had consensual sex with the female complainant behind the Moss Point High School stadium while on duty, but no ticket was destroyed in exchange for the sex, Smallman said in a previous report.

The woman was a passenger in her own vehicle when her friend received a ticket from Williams, Smallman has said.

The complainant alleged that she asked Williams if anything could be done about the ticket, and Williams "told her to meet him at the stadium to talk about the ticket," Smallman has said.

Smallman also has said the complainant noted that Williams asked her for sex in exchange for the ticket being torn up.

Williams denied the accusations at the Tuesday meeting and it remains unclear what happened to any ticket that may have been written.
