upcycled indian sari textiles
sustainable pillow inserts
Azo dyes are typically the major colourants in the textile industry due to their colorfastness and wide spectrum. However, many of these dyes have proven to be carcinogenic, and possibly harmful on contact for the workers and consumers of these products.
Handmade Expressions undergoes thorough testing of all the dyes used in our products, such as the Metallic Block Print pillows. We verify the dyes are azo-free and non-toxic for your and the planet's safety.
Saris are beautiful and colorful fabric garments that are traditionally worn by women in India. Due to the various textile fabrics that saris are made by, they typically end up in landfills at the end of their life.
The use of upcycled Indian sari textiles for products (like the Reversible Sari bag) helps to prolong the life of these exquisite fabrics from ending up in landfills. In addition, Handmade Expressions now packages your fair trade products in upcycled sari packaging. The result is a more sustainable alternative to plastic that also provides additional employment for the artisans who develop the sari packaging.
Our sustainable pillow inserts are made using infinitely recyclable fiber fill. They are made using a minimum of 95% post-consumer recycled plastic, are allergy-free and made consuming no water. They are processed in the USA.
Handmade Expressions has recently switched to the use of these sustainable pillow inserts as the filler of all of our gorgeous products, such as our new line of Exotic Batik pillow cases. Not only are the pillows eye-catching, but you can rest assured the fillers are just as sustainably developed as the product itself.
Cotton is natural cellulosic fiber, which is known to grow in warm climates such as the U.S., India, China, Uzbekistan and Brazil. Cotton is naturally near white in color and soft.
Because cotton is a natural fabric, products made from this material, such as our new line of Duchess Totes, are biodegradable and can be composted at the end of their useful life.

Sustainably sourced leather means that the leather itself has been sourced mainly from naturally dead animals (cows are sacred in India) and is tanned using natural materials like salt and oils instead of conventional toxic tanning chemicals. Partnering with on-ground organizations that work directly with these artisan communities allows us to be sure of the sustainable nature of this leather. Our journals and other leather products create a significant number of jobs for communities that have been in leather craft for generations and have been struggling in recent past due to competition with synthetic alternatives to leather. This economic sustainability is the catalyst for long-term social change.

Batik handprint is the process of drawing with wax on fabric. This rural community in northwest India consists of 350 artisans, mostly women, who proudly use this distinctive art form to make beautiful textiles. The primary mission of this organization is to empower local community, build their capacity, and provide skills development and practical improvements in health and education. Handmade Expressions supports the work of this organization through long-term buying partnerships and support for product design, logistics and quality improvement. Our India team conducts skills trainings and interactive workshops for nutrition and hygiene. All dyes used in the process are AZO-free (non-toxic), which is healthier for people and our planet.
